Networking

Today has been a day of networking.

First, I finished up homework for my networking course.

Then, I went to the most amazing session ever- about social networking and Web 2.0! Expect to find me on a billion more networks (okay, maybe not that many but a good bit) by the end of the day. Yaaaaaay Web 2.0!!! :D

Let’s Go Mobile!

Today has really been just a day of exploring around San Francisco. We visited the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as the Fisherman’s Wharf (which is way too hyped up). I also realized that I really miss a good public transportation system, which is something that Barcelona had. Going around San Francisco also made me realize how much I missed traveling. Anyway, below is a picture of the bridge.

Also, I think the title behind this post is a funny one. We were at the conference for lunch today, and some conference workers came around and threw little pom-poms on the table, which had cute messages attached to them, including “I Love To Swing” (get it? :D) and “Let’s Go Mobile”, which was also used as a pick-up line on my friend! Anyway, it’s an amusing story, I thought.

To round out a very fun day, we went to the Smashmouth concert, thanks bunches to Sun for that, and it was awesome (I was in the first row in the center!!), as you can see from this picture! :)

Tomorrow will be our last day in California: it was a long conference, but totally worth it! I cannot wait for work on Monday!! :)

JavaOne: D?a 2

We are back again for another fun-filled day of learning at JavaOne! :D

The talks today were pretty awesome too, but my favorite ones were Asynchronous Ajax for Revolutionary Web Applications and What?s New in Ajax. Anyway, this will be a short post, because it’s been a busy day. Also, we spent a lot of time in the Pavilion area, just browsing all of the different companies (and of course, like all of the developers there, trying to get our fair share of free stuff). Also, Oracle gave away tickets to see Iron Man, and since we got some, we are off to there! Woohoo! :)

Also, there was a tour today, supposedly led by James Gosling. It was an extremely disappointing tour for many reasons:

  • It took us about 20 minutes for us to chase down the tour and catch up with them (they left 5 minutes after the last session ended), and none of the event staff knew the tour route.
  • When we finally did catch up to the tour, we were hoping to meet other students that were also enthusiastic about learning, and they totally were not at ALL. Plus, there were high school students there, and I thought this was a college-students-only program (not that I have anything against high school students).
  • James Gosling really didn’t do much of a “tour”, and he wasn’t very interested at all. He kind of went off about less than 5 minutes after we got there.

As much as I love the JavaOne conference and the speakers, general sessions, etc., I feel that the Student Program was not at all properly organized. The courses that were offered ran right through a block of really good sessions (like Joshua Bloch’s talk). Plus, I saw a grand total of another 9 students there: I didn’t see any more of them anywhere, so I wonder where they all went? It would be cool to organize a social event after-hours just for students (like an ice-cream social or something) one night, so we can all just get together and talk (we missed Monday’s reception, but one of the other students told us only 5 students were there anyway…). Anyway, these are just thoughts for next year if anybody from Sun ends up reading this… :)

Anyway, tomorrow might be a day of sight-seeing, but we’ll see… more later! And, of course, one picture to close out the day today from one of the better talks! :)

JavaOne: D?a 1

Today is officially the first day of JavaOne! :) Yaaaaaaay!! It’s really been awesome! :)

The opening general session is in this huuuuuuuge room, and they have like break-dancers and other performers before the session actually starts. Then, John Gage came on stage and introduced Rich Green, who showed us some of the newer technologies that are coming out (with back or front-end Java implementation, of course :)), and they are soooooooo cool!! :) I think my favorite one was probably Connected Life: it is an application (both online and offline) where you can basically link all of your accounts into one space, and wa-laa! All parts of your life are, well, connected! :) It is even a Facebook application, or you can just drag-and-drop it from Facebook to your desktop: it is really awesome, and I cannot wait to add it (see picture below).

After the general session, I went to lots of different sessions, but I really like Joshua Block’s “More Effective Java”… he’s a really good speaker! :) I also went to “PHP meet Java”, which was really cool, because I love PHP and it’s nice to see the tie-in with JavaOne and how much more powerful it can be. I also went to a “music and technology” session, and that was really cool, because they had actually programmed a DIGITAL PIANO (see picture below)!!

Anyway, there were a few other talks that I attended, but those were pretty much the highlights. I cannot wait to see what tomorrow brings. I’m so excited! :D Here are a few picture highlights from today.

In California!

We are finally here! Woohoo! :)

It’s been a while since I had a chance to update. But basically, one of my good friends and I are here for the week to attend the annual JavaOne Developer’s Conference. Sun Microsystems was really awesome and decided to give out FREE STUDENT PASSES this year to both JavaOne and CommunityOne (the one-day event before JavaOne). Anyway, we missed most of CommunityOne, because by the time our flight came in and we got to the Moscone Center, it was almost 3PM. But, we did register and get our really cool-looking, RFID-enhanced badges, as well as get acquainted with the environment.

We did get the chance to sit in on a few sessions, including one about some web technologies: it was really good, but a lot of the things went over my head. I did, however, pick up some really cool terms, like cloud computing, and I think I got the general picture. The second session I went to, though, it was about Jython/Python, and it was absolutely HORRIBLE! The man that was on stage was swearing every time his demo didn’t work… which was practically every line! I was not at all happy, and in fact, over half of the people ended up leaving the session.

Later that night, we attended the CommunityOne reception, where the food was really nice, and we met another Tech student! :)

Also, since my father works at Sun and he goes to JavaOne every year (I really wish he was able to speak this year… the one year I was able to go!), I got to meet up with him, which was really great! :) He is working on the Glassfish project, and he went to all of the talks and BOFs (Birds-of-a-feather) about those: I think he really likes it and that he’s really good at it. Check out his blog for more information (it’s really good)! :)

Anyway, here are a few pictures from the first day! I cannot wait to see what the rest of the week has in store for me! :)

I <3 Java :)
